Jaguar is to take the fight to the BMW M3 with a hot SVR version of its new XE packing a 489bhp V8

Jaguar is planning a BMW M3-beating high performance version of its forthcoming XE Sedan, Auto Express can reveal.
It will use the supercharged 5.0-litre V8 from the F-Type S roadster tuned to 489bhp to enable it to sprint from 0-62mph in around four seconds and go on to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

JLR’s recently formed Special Vehicle Operations division will prepare the car and it’s tipped to wear the company’s new SVR performance badge.
Set to arrive by early 2016 for around £60,000, the XE SVR will also use the firm’s 8-speed automatic gearbox only it will be programmed to offer faster shifts than in the standard car.

There will be a raft of other upgrades too including larger performance brakes, stiffer and lower suspension and an electronically controlled limited slip rear differential for improved traction.

Styling changes will probably include a bespoke body kit with unique front bumper treatment and grille, side skirts, flared wheel arches and a redesigned rear bumper with integrated diffuser and quad tailpipes.
The car will get an active exhaust system to ensure the engine noise isn’t too intrusive while cruising but suitably loud under hard acceleration. Likely upgrades inside the cabin could include unique trims and colour schemes and body hugging sports seats.

Jaguar will extensively test the car on the Nurburgring in a bid to ensure it can deliver the necessary performance and handling to beat the 425bhp 3.0-litre bi-turbo BMW M3 and the forthcoming Mercedes C63 AMG which will uses a bi-turbo 4.0-litre V8.

It is not like this is the first car that has tried to take down the M3. Do you think that Jaguar actually has a chance at beating, or at least putting a dent in the M3?

I still have a hard time seeing BMW falling from grace.
Unless it can turn the M# won't even bat an eyelash. C63 AMG, now that's a different story....
I think Jaguar has a chance at doing this, they're great when it comes to building vehicles that can perform.
I am surprised that they are fitting a V8 in the XE. That is a big engine for a fairly small car. Would be a blast to drive.
Just seen that Cadillac didn't stick with a V8 for the ATS-V, which is a bit disappointing, at least Jag is keeping the 8.

any more info on that atsv?

post a link.
and they must protect the cts v.
this is true, if the ATSV came with a V8, imagine what that might to do the CTSV, which in that case, good move on their part.
I just can't wait to hear what this supercharged v8 of theirs will sound like!

Between price and features, there's plenty of room for rivals to beat the 3 (M or otherwise) at it's own game. Especially since BMW has drifted away from driving dynamics as the focus for the vanilla 3, and made something of a game out of how high they can push the price of a well equipped M3 ($89k loaded).

In my eyes, the only reason it hasn't happened already is because other brands are determined to use the 3 as a target, rather than a benchmark to be exceeded. Say what you will about the styling, but Lexus IS has trumped them in terms of quality and features (and by many accounts, is in many ways "beating" the 3). Cadillac ATS has seemingly out BMW'ed BMW in terms of driving dynamics. But nobody has come to the table with a no compromises complete package that meant to exceed what BMW offers rather than just emulate them.

There's plenty of opportunity to build a car that offers a feature laden car with everything the 3 offers and more. If the reveal is any indication, Jag is already planning on that. If they can serve up old good driving dynamics and comfort and keep it beneath BMW's lofty price tags, I don't see why they couldn't dethrone the M3.

So you do think that it is possible then. Is the key the price tag then? If they can offer the same or better for less price then maybe Jaguar can pull this off.

Although in fairness much of the F-Types snarl is derived from the pipes. So I don't expect the XE to be as I'll eat your children sounding...

The key is "no compromises", IMO. Price being a key element of it, which is an easy feat considering how expensive the M3 is. Being a European brand will probably work in their favor, too. Jaguar just needs to be less conservative and more aggressive than Lexus and Cadillac were in trying to tackle BMW.

Oh this is conservative?

Cadillac fell short because they were asking for BMW money, the product is fantastic, the ATS is arguably a much better car than the 3, the problem is when you ask for BMW money people say well might as well have a BMW. There is no incentive to switch. What jaguar needs to do is position the XE as a need to escape the monotony of German cars. Make Need=Freedom and they'll sell a million

At least we should be able to pick out how much it sounds like the F-Type, good example for now.
Hopefully jaguar comes through on creating that escape.
