The Volvo S60 seems to be a great car, but not as tailored to performance and the driving experience when compared to the XE. It does win out when it comes to fuel economy though. Volvo's reputation for industry leading safety is also present in the S60 with features like, Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake, Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with Full Auto Brake and Lane Departure Warning, among other features. It was a IIHS Top Safety Pick +.

The Jaguar XE brings performance where the Volvo S60 lacks it. It has more horsepower, a quicker acceleration, and its figures are class leading even without four-wheel drive or computer-modulated launch control. It has worse fuel economy than the Volvo S60, which may be more important to some buyers than the power that you have a your feet. IIHS has not crash tested it yet, but it is expected to get a 5-star rating from Euro NCAP.

Ultimately, if it's the driving experience that you are after, you should go with the XE, but if that isn't at the top of your priority list, the Volvo S60 is definitely a vehicle that is worth checking out.

I actually like the S60 design. I suppose it is a somewhat conservative design, but i don't think it is boring. It isn't trying to be as sporty and that translates to its design as well. I don't think the S60 is a bad car by any means, it just totally depends what you are looking for.

I'm quite a Volvo fan, I've had several (s40, s40T5, c70T5, S60R, V40T5 CC) and I drive the s60 as a loaner when the Jag or V40 are having services.


The Volvo seats are beautifully comfortable, much better than Jags usually though the XE has pretty good seating. The stereos in the volvos are usually much better than anything I've experienced in a Jag, even the high end systems though I don't know how good the meridian 380W system is. The instrument cluster in the Volvo isn't very user friendly though the cabin is very nice.


The steering in the Volvo s60 has been traditionally very heavy and is quite a negative but the electric power steering improved that a lot. What is terrible in the Volvo is the turning circle which makes it hard to park - the Jag's is big too but it seemed easier to park to me.


The s60 also has quite a bit of torque steer particularly when you give it some boot from a start, I thought it was twitchy and I lost grip easily. Then again test driving the XE 20T I lost grip, but at least that was in the back and not the front. The Volvo also suffers badly on rougher roads, though it is beautiful on smooth roads.


I like the Volvo s60 design quite a bit, though it is nowhere near as nice as the Jag. It is getting too close to a Passat for my liking.


If I had to fit 5 in the car, the s60 would be pretty compelling, but the Jag is so much more fun to drive (rather than being nice to drive) I'd probably take the XE and the passengers could suffer.

I just think that they are for very different types of people. Jaguar is offering performance that can also be used as a family car. The Volvo is focusing on safety and comfort, that also is pretty good with performance. I think the the S60 might be cross shopped more with the Acura TLX than the XE.

I'm surprised by that. I would have thought Volvo would be good for things like that. Seems like they like to give a nice and smooth ride, free of noise pollution. interesting...
