I'm quite interested in how they're going to adapt the Ingenium for diesel. The diesel and petrol layouts/components are supposed to be identical which will be interesting becasue the conventional belief has been that its impossible. Well not IMpossible, GM tried to do it and soured the entre US market to diesel for some 30 odd years...

I've read that the Ingenium only weighs about 176 lbs. Now I'm not sure if this is just the block or the entire sum...

Its Ingenium is based on a 0.5-liter aluminum block, and weighs up to 176 lb. It comes in both diesel and petrol versions that use common internal components, and both are turbocharged for better low-speed performance and improved fuel mileage with lower emissions.

So is the low weight one of this new engine one of the main benefits? I guess the low weight in itself would help with fuel efficiency, so it is more than just weight, it affects other things as well.

indeed, less rotating mass internally less energy required to get things in motion. I assume lighter components also works to reduce friction and internal wear...
