What Happened to XS?

All the chatter during last summer and leading into Geneva even was that the XE was actually going to be called the XS and the XE was bandied about as the name of the XK's replacement...

Just wondering if anyone knows why the swap happened?

I guess they wanted to use "XS" as the codename for the test mule's, car makers do it quite often, wouldn't be surprised if that was their real intention here.
XS was never an official term used by Jaguar, it was generally thought that XS was a good name, however it had already been used on a car previously, and XS might be construed to mean Excess, which I am sure Jaguar would have already been aware of.

XE is perfect, it is a great nod to the past, either via XKE or E-Type, there was a post where I predicted XE back in February HERE, I also did a piece HERE at post 13 indicating that I though back at the begining of February that XE was my choice, I am glad they chose it.

Our deposit has already been paid, cant wait for more news as it appears.
Makes sense, i guess that's just was what media and everyone else used for the time being going with the rest of Jaguar's naming structure.
Yea it seems like they just switched the name from concept to production. 'XS' kinda makes it sound like the car is too much. You know? "excess"
Car makers always do that, have some codename for the concept and mules and once they announce that it's official, then you hear about the official name.
Ok, XS, was NEVER used on the XE, either on design, conception, concept or consideration for the actual model, it was ONLY ever used by the media who speculated that it might be XS, the name had been used by a number of other non premium brands before, hence the reason why it was never ever a consideration.

This is true, even a quick google search shows nothing from jaguar on it from what i have seen... just a bunch of articles from random blogs.
XS might be a good name for a sub XE sedan ;)
but is there legitimately room below the XE regardless? There is a real opportunity to distance themselves from mercedes as they dip below 30 grand..

i doubt it
i think it might water the brand down too much
but who knows maybe they will go for it.
